Kids with Hyperactivity, Attention Deficit and Learning Disorders

Hyperactive disorders, Attention deficit and Learning disability are some problems that I have been able to treat rather successfully, over the years, with herbs. In many cases, I was able to gradually taper off and eventually discontinue, allopathic drugs like Addwize or Ritalin that a child had been taking previously.

Hyperactivity often prevents a child from sitting still long enough to learn anything in school and it therefore makes even an intelligent child fall back in his Class which in turn, makes the child begin to hate school. The child then gets caught in a vicious circle, where school becomes a torture for both, the child and his parents.

'Attention deficit' is the result of hyperactivity of the mind; a hyperactive mental state prevents the child from focusing on lessons for long enough for him to learn any subject, especially subjects he doesn't like or subjects he is basically weak in, to start with.
This can lead to disaster in school.
Teachers are sympathetic upto a point but when a child, who is constantly falling back in his lessons, also is the source of frequent disturbances in class through his hyperactive behaviour, well then..... a teacher's patience can wear out too.
School counsellors in Indian schools are realising that the burden of having to learn more than two languages (often three) in our schools, is simply not fair to our children. But this is an unavoidable necessity, without any immediate solution on the horizon. Maths is a 'language', too. So you can imagine the amount of input a child is compelled to absorb into his brain, right from the kindergarten level!

An overload of studies combined with a constant censure from teachers can lead to severe emotional disorders in children with hyperactivity and attention disorder; many become aggressive; others withdraw into a shell; still others develop psycho-somatic problems, needing medical treatment.

TREATMENT of HYPERACTIVITY and ATTENTION DISORDERS

Getting a very detailed history of the child, including his family life, is necessary in order to identify and to then understand, the different problems an individual child my be facing. There would be problems at home and problems in school, each needing separate attention.

Often, dietary alterations help. I use the Ayurvedic concepts of the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) to help reduce the level of hyperactivity in the child, by advising which foods to include and which foods to avoid, in the child's diet.

Monitoring his 'play time activities' can also help to avoid a build-up of hyperactivity in a child. There are certain games that would increase a child's hyperactivity and of course, they should be discouraged.

Most importantly, we have several herbs that we can use, to tackle various dimensions of hyperactivity and ADHD. Herbs like Brahmi, Shankhpushpi etc improve memory and are safe to use.

I use other, less well-known herbs like Gorakhmundi too; when combined with some 'vata-reducing herbs'  and camphor, it works quite well.

Oil massage with medicated Til Oil (Sesame oil) is of great benefit, in hyperactivity. It calms not only the body but also the mind.

Today, I am happy to record many successful stories of the children I have treated when they were in school. Some of them have gone on to become highly qualified individuals, in diverse fields of study and work (two have become doctors). I would like to emphasize that their struggle to become 'normal' and lead  'normal' lives was considerably helped by herbs and also by following the tenets of Ayurveda in their daily routines!

I have written a separate blog called  http://indianpedi.blogspot.com/ where I have written about the therapies for Hyperactivity and ADHD in detail.
